German GP dropped from 2015 F1 schedule
(SportsNetwork.com) – Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, confirmed on Friday that it has dropped the German Grand Prix from the 2015 schedule.
The FIA said in a release “the German Grand Prix has been withdrawn as the CRH (commercial rights holder) and promoter did not reach agreement.”
There will now be 19 grand prix on this year’s F1 calendar. F1 began its season last weekend in Melbourne, Australia. The German GP had been scheduled for the third weekend in July, in between the grand prix in Great Britain and Hungary.
The Nurburgring circuit was to host the German GP this year after Hockenheim staged it in 2014. Both circuits have an agreement to hold the race on alternate years. Nurburgring had to withdrawal its 2015 date due to financial reasons. Hockenheim attempted to secure the date but could not come to an agreement with F1 top boss Bernie Ecclestone.
Germany has hosted a F1 grand prix each year since 1960. Last year’s race was won by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, a German.
