General a Rod to face Cairo Prince in Florida Derby
Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Trainer Mike Maker confirmed Friday that his 3-year-old colt General a Rod will take on Holy Bull Stakes winner Cairo Prince in the $1 million Florida Derby on Saturday, March 29.
“Everything’s on go for the Florida Derby. The timing is good, and he obviously likes the track,” Maker said. “Everything was in play. There were pros and cons that weighed into it, but he’s right here, he can run right out of his own stall, and he’s run well here.”
Owned by J. Armando Rodriquez, General a Rod began the year with a victory in the Gulfstream Park Derby over Wildcat Red. Next time out, the two 3-year-olds reversed the order in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream.
General a Rod has earned $182,200 with two wins and two seconds in his four starts.
