Former Tour champion Cadel Evans announces retirement
(SportsNetwork.com) – Former Tour de France champion Cadel Evans has announced his retirement.
Evans won cycling’s most prestigious event in 2011 and was the runner-up in 2007 and 2008.
The 37-year-old Australian made the announcement Thursday with a statement on his personal website. Evans said he will finish his career in an event in his native country next February.
“After a long period of contemplation within, and with those closest to me, I feel it is the right time to end my journey in competitive professional cycling,” Evans said.
Evans also won the UCI Road World Championship in 2009.
