Boca Raton, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Jamia Fields’ late second-half goal held up as the winner on Sunday as top-ranked Florida State earned a 1-0 win over Virginia to claim its first Women’s Division 1 championship at FAU Stadium.

Both programs entered the title match looking for their first title, and it was a tight battle for the opening 45 minutes between two of the top programs in women’s college soccer.

The clubs emerged from the halftime break still scoreless and things became more tense as it got later in the match, but with seven minutes to play, the winning tally came as Fields collected a pass from Cheyna Williams and ripped it just inside the right post from the top of the penalty area for her fourth goal of the season.

Following the goal, Virginia went for broke, using three substitutions in a two-minute span to bring on Morgan Reuther, Veronica Latsko and Meghan Cox hoping to ignite an offensive spark.

Virginia created a handful of opportunities late on as Reuther blasted one over the crossbar in the 88th minute and Latsko directed a header just over the bar one minute later, but the equalizing goal never came and Florida State celebrated its first-ever national title.
