San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – The San Diego Chargers have signed veteran running back Ronnie Brown in an attempt to help a depleted rushing unit.

Brown, who began the season with Houston before being cut, returns to the Chargers after spending the past two seasons with the team. He rushed for 377 yards on 91 carries and caught 57 passes for 431 yards in 30 games for San Diego.

The 32-year-old played a pivotal roll in San Diego’s 27-10 AFC Wild Card win over Cincinnati last season, rushing for a playoff career-high 77 yards with a touchdown.

The Chargers have had trouble with depth at the running back position as starter Ryan Mathews went down with an MCL sprain, backup Danny Woodhead suffered a season-ending broken leg and Donald Brown endured a concussion in Sunday’s win over the Jets.

It is expected that Mathews will return this season, but Ronnie Brown will look to assist undrafted rookie Branden Oliver until either Mathews or Donald Brown return from injury.

Oliver had a coming-out party of sorts on Sunday as he rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown and also hauled in a touchdown reception after taking over for Donald Brown early in the contest.
