Englewood, CO (SportsNetwork.com) – Former Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater was released by the Denver Broncos on Friday.

Prater, who converted 25-of-26 field goals and set an NFL record with a 64- yard field goal last season, was suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

The Denver Post reported that the offense was alcohol-related. He has been in the league’s alcohol program since being charged with driving under the influence on Aug. 12, 2011.

Prater was the longest tenured Bronco since being signed from Miami’s practice squad in December of 2007.

“Parting ways with Matt Prater, the longest-tenured player on our roster, was a very difficult football decision,” Broncos general manager John Elway said. “On behalf of our entire organization, I want to thank Matt for his seven seasons with the Broncos and wish him well going forward.”

Denver will move forward with Brandon McManus at kicker. The rookie from Temple has made all three of his field-goal attempts and has recorded 14 touchbacks on 16 kickoffs.

“Brandon McManus has earned the opportunity to continue kicking for our team with how well he’s played to start the season,” Elway said. “He has a very strong leg and we have confidence in him on both field goals and kickoffs.”
