Biggest Contenders at the MLB Trade Deadline

The MLB trade deadline is still several weeks away, but that doesn’t mean that the rumor mill hasn’t already started churning. Here are the biggest names that are being floated around, and where they’re likely to be headed.

David Price
LHP, Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays need help, and they need fresh faces. Unloading Price may be just a way for them to do that, and it will free up room for them in their budget. If the Rays were to trade Price it would most likely be to the Cardinals, although they may wait until the offseason; the Chicago Cubs, who would likely trade Javier Baez or first-round pick Albert Almora; or the Boston Red Sox, who could sign him long-term. This latter is something the Rays certainly can’t afford to do.

Bud Norris
RHP, Houston Astros
Norris is in the position of not being strong enough for his team to desperately need him; but his team also controls his contract for another two years. His strong start to this season gives the Astros some bargaining power; and his last few poor starts might give the team reason to use it.

Josh Willingham
OF, Minnesota Twins
Willingham is one of those special players that’s having an incredible season, and that doesn’t come with a huge salary. The Twins are in a precarious situation, where they need to be careful or that dreadful “rebuilding” word will come up. The gamble for the team is do they keep Willingham, and rest their hope on him? Or do they try to get a couple of great players right now in exchange for him, and go for the depth value?
