Houston Astros History

The Houston Colt .45's were founded in 1962 as a way of bringing baseball to the people of Texas. Because both American and National Leagues were expanding, the Houston Sports Association, led by first team owner Roy Hofheinz, knew it was time to bring baseball to Texas. After the team became part of the league, construction began on what was to be called a wonder of the modern world.

This wonder is none other than the old Houston Astrodome. When the Astrodome was completed, the team changed its name to the Astros to fit themselves with the building. Hofheinz modeled the stadium to be built like the Coliseum in Rome, Italy because he wanted it to stand out and show the country that Houston was a baseball city. The Astros would play here until it was officially closed down in 1999.

The Astros glory days would ensue at the end of the Astrodome's lifespan as they won their division four times between 1997 and 2001. However, it was in the new ballpark, Minute Maid Park, that the Astros would win their first and only Pennant in 2005. They had a wealth of talent on that team with players like Roger Clemens, Craig Biggio, and Jeff Bagwell, but ultimately came up short in the World Series.

Other Houston Teams

Besides being host to many different rodeo competitions throughout the year, Houston has two major sports franchises other than the Astros. These teams are the Texans and the Rockets. The Rockets are the city's NBA affiliate team and have had much success over the past two decades. They always field a competitive team with such NBA mega stars as Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. Also they had one of the most dominant centers in NBA history named Hakeem Olajuwon.

The other major team in the located in the city Houston is the Texans. The Texans are a member of the National Football League and have been progressively getting better since they we started in the early 2000's. When the Oilers, the long time Houston franchise moved to Tennessee, a void in the city was created. Football and the city of Houston killed two birds with one stone when the NFL expanded to 32 teams balancing all of its divisions and getting a pro team back in football country.
