Minnesota Twin History

While the Twins have only been in Minnesota since 1961, the origins of the organization stem back to the formation of the American League. The Washington D.C. Senators were one of the first teams created in this new ball league and stayed in this city until 1960. When baseball wanted to expand, owner Calvin Griffith saw a fresh start for his struggling club and moved the team to Minneapolis.

In 1961, the team changed its name from the Senators to the Twins to encourage citizens of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area to watch the team. The team helped it cause in this city by being initially successful thanks to players like Rod Carew, Jim Kaat, and Harmon Killebrew. They would make it to the World Series in 1965 but failed to take home the coveted baseball crown.

The people of Minnesota would have to wait another 22 years before they saw their Twins win the World Series. In 1987, armed with players like Kurby Puckett and Chuck Knoblauch, the Twins brought home their first title for the city of Minneapolis. They would repeat this feat in 1991, when they beat the Braves to capture their second title for Minnesota and third for the organization.

Other Minnesota Teams

There are two other major sports teams in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota and oddly enough, each is named for the state rather than the city mirroring the Twins. The first is the Minnesota Wild who are the cities NHL affiliate. Before the Wild, the North Stars were a major hockey team in this city but left to play in Dallas. Minnesota has always been a hockey state and the Wild were established to fill the void left by the North Stars. This team is now working its way up the hockey ranks.

The other major sports franchise based out of Minneapolis is the Vikings. They are the city's NFL representative and play in the always tough NFC North Division. While the Vikings have had success in the past, today they are one of the premier teams in the National Football League. They also have been given complete control of the Metrodome since the Twins have recently moved into their new ballpark, Target Field.
