Alabama State coach Barlow asked to resign

Montgomery, AL (SportsNetwork.com) – Alabama State football coach Reggie Barlow faces worse than a four-game losing streak.

The eighth-year coach has been asked to resign by the end of the season, The Montgomery Advertiser reported late Tuesday.

Barlow has a 46-41 record at the Southwestern Athletic Conference university, including 4-5 this season. The newspaper said athletic director Melvin Hines met with Barlow on Tuesday and gave him an ultimatum of walking away immediately or at the end of the year.

In early September, Barlow signed a three-year contract extension with ASU to a reported annual salary of $172,420.

He is an alumnus of Alabama State and played in the NFL for eight seasons (1996-2003) as a wide receiver and return specialist. He was a member of the Tampa Buccaneers’ Super Bowl XXXVII championship squad.

Alabama State hosts Jackson State on Saturday, hoping to pull back to .500 after losing four straight games.
