WWE Starts Promoting Rock vs. Cena Several Months Early

It’s never too early to start talking about the next Wrestlemania, particularly when it’s sure to be one of the biggest headlines of the last ten years!  Wrestlemania 28 is set and it’s going to be John Cena vs. The Rock, part time movie star, part time wrestler, full time entertainer.

The Rock started in WWE pro wrestling entertainment in the “Attitude” era of the 1990s.  Back then, it was cool to be bawdy, aggressive and downright evil.  However, since the 2000s have emerged, the WWE has shifted their focus to more family-oriented entertainment.  Enter John Cena, the guy kids love to love and rebellious teens love to hate.  Cena is the proverbial “face”, a nice guy with a clean cut “white rapper” image.  He’s a kiddy favorite (which is the #1 WWE demographic) but the anti-thesis of what WWE Attitude era was all about.

Hence, the stage is set for the returning Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, who has a bone to pick with Cena.  The two most recently met at Wrestlemania 27, when The Rock cost Cena the WWE Championship against The Miz.  Since then, both Cena and The Rock have been quite vocal about their inevitable encounter, now set for March/April 2012.

Cena has had his hands full lately with CM Punk, not to mention a whole locker room full of heels who are aiming for his head.  Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson has had his hands full with movie sets, autograph sessions, pretty ladies and working out at a leisurely pace inside fitness centers all over the world.

The Rock recently paid Twitter a visit, and informed his fans that he wasn’t coming back to the WWE for a belt or for an extended run.  He was only coming to “Give the millions what they want…which is to kick John Cena’s f’n ass.”  That’s hard talk coming from Johnson, who of course, is an “actor” and more than capable of delivering action-packed dialog like that.  However, will he really be ready to take out Cena when the time comes?  How intensely is he training in the meantime?

What do you think?  Is The Rock too Hollywood and too out of shape to compete against the WWE’s most active competitor?  Will Cena finally earn street-credibility by defeating The Rock in the middle of the ring?
