WWE Meets the Muppets? Honestly, Haven’t Stranger Things Already Happened?
No, what you’re reading right now isn’t a publishing error. An article about the Muppets did not accidentally get inserted into an article about professional wrestling. Strange but true, you will see Muppets interacting with tough WWE wrestlers within the month.
Of course, the Muppets’ appearance will be far from typical, so it would only make sense if it happened on Halloween night–a night already favored for shenanigans and crazy costumes. The biggest stars of professional wrestling are scheduled to meet the likes of Animal, Gonzo, Fozzy, and if we get our wish, Statler and Waldorf, those two old Muppets that make fun of everything. Why, their cynicism might even be a match for Jerry Lawler’s own absurd color commentating!
It’s going to be a night of bizarre encounters and some bad Vaudeville routines for sure. The biggest questions on our minds: will Kermit get assaulted by someone bigger than Miss Piggy? Will Bunsen Honeydew get the equally red-headed Sheamus confused with his mad scientist partner Beaker?
Of course, since the Muppets have limited use of their legs expect most of the night to include backstage skits. We’re assuming Disney approved the crossover with the guarantee that puppeteers won’t be injured or revealed on camera. And too bad, because Stone Cold Steve Austin beating up the guy who controls Gonzo would be kind of funny.
The appearance does have a purpose beyond shock value. The appearance by the Muppets is actually a publicity appearance to push the release of The Muppets (produced by Disney) that opens on Thanksgiving weekend. All this talk of Disney and Muppets is not entirely out of character for the “new WWE”, which is catering to younger audiences, and abandoning its “Attitude era” bad behavior of the past. Case in point: the white bread champion John Cena, who sort of looks like a Muppet.
