Olympics Gymnastics Heats Up!

Second to maybe only swimming, gymnastics is an event that makes spectators ‘ooh’ and ‘aah.’ And that’s something that always makes for great sporting events! So after the Jordyn Wieber upset on Sunday, what’s happened since?

Jordyn Wieber may have missed her shot to compete in the all-around, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t still have a medal to brag about. These four women, who have fought through bars and tears together, didn’t just win the gold on Tuesday; they gave the U.S. their first team title in over 15 years, since 1996.

Kohei Uchimura

Uchimura had his share of demons to overcome this Olympics. Starting the Olympics, Uchimura predicted that he would win a gold medal in all five events in which he was competing. When he faced the pommel horse on Wednesday, he was only eligible for two, having won none yet. Pulling off a brilliant performance, and then facing the judge’s scrutiny that could have cost him any medal at all, Uchimura was rewarded with that gold shiny piece of flash hanging around his neck.

Gymnastics are to the Summer Olympics what figure skating is to the Winter Olympics — an event that you can count on to be fully loaded with drama. With the Wieber debacle this past weekend, and the fact that Uchimura didn’t just have to conquer personal battles but also scrutiny from the judges, this year in London has proven to be no different.
