Kings Well on Their Way to the Cup!

No one has one single explanation for what the Los Angeles Kings are doing this postseason. Call it many great players coming together to realize their potential at the perfect time; or call it a goalie that does his part for his team night after night. Call it momentum from being the only team ever in the NHL to go undefeated on the road during the playoffs. Call it what you want, but the chances are that you’ll call it a couple of things. Because there is no single explanation for what the LA Kings are doing this postseason.

It was on Saturday night when the Kings faced the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals. And while goaltender Jonathan Quick saved 32 shots to help make it happen, he wasn’t focused on this victory, or the recent ones past. “We know how great of a team they are, so we’ve got to bring our best Monday if we think we’re going to have a chance to win it.”

At this point, it’s more than a chance with the Kings realizing their heavily-favored status just two games into the series. And even though defenseman Willie Mitchell later credited “some breaks…and some luck,” to their amazing run so far, the Kings also have the stats to back them up. In this series where they’re up 2-0, they are also up 4-0 this postseason, 10-0 on the road, and are 14-2 overall for road wins. That’s not just great, that’s Gretzky-great or perhaps even better, as the team couldn’t win a Cup even with the great one on their team.

In fact if the Kings win the Cup, it will be the first time it’s ever been done in the club’s 45-year history. And this coming from one of the last-seeded teams in the league during regular season. It’s been almost twenty years since a team so far down in the standings has gone on to the win the Cup; and it’s ironic that the last time was in 1995, when the New Jersey Devils won.
