Keeneland based horses work for Breeders’ Cup
Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) – Don’t Tell Sophia was one of three Breeders’ Cup hopefuls to put in Saturday workouts at Keeneland.
Don’t Tell Sophia, ridden by Joe Rocco Jr., went four furlongs in 48.80 seconds for trainer Phil Sims and owner Jerry Namy. Don’t Tell Sophia galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.20 as she trains for the Distaff.
“Good and easy. I am just trying to get her there,” Sims said. “She will probably have a similar work next Saturday with a strong gallop during the week.”
Grand Arch, runner-up to two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile, covered a half-mile in 52.20 seconds under jockey Julien Leparoux.
“That is the first time I’ve had him on the dirt, and I just wanted to let him stretch his legs,” trainer Brian Lynch said. “He is not very aggressive on his own. He will do a little more next week, five-eighths, and tighten the screws a bit.”
Grand Arch is owned by Susan and Jim Hill and will start in the Mile with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez riding.
Ashbrook Farm’s Southern Honey worked a half-mile in 46.80 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 58.80 seconds under Leparoux. Southern Honey, trained by Rusty Arnold, is probable to start in the $1 million Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 1.
“She went slightly quicker than I thought she would,” Arnold said. “I am going to meet with the owners tomorrow morning and go over everything and we’ll make a decision.”
