IOC appoints McConnell as new sports director
Lausanne, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) – The International Olympic Committee has appointed Kit McConnell as its new sports director.
McConnell is currently the head of the Rugby World Cup and previously spent time with the IOC as manager of sport operations from 2000-02.
Rugby will be part of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, returning to the Games for the first time since 1924.
In his previous stint with the IOC, McConnell was responsible for coordinating sport planning with organizing committees and international federations. He also coordinated the planning of all sports for the 2000 Sydney Organizing Committee.
“Mr. McConnell brings great expertise to the IOC in the area of planning, managing and delivering major sporting events,” said the IOC in a statement.
The 40-year-old national from Australia and New Zealand will succeed Christophe Dubi, who will become the Olympic Games executive director next year.
