Changes made to NASCAR All-Star Race weekend

Concord, NC (SportsNetwork.com) – Officials from Charlotte Motor Speedway announced on Tuesday a scheduling change to the May 17 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, with the Sprint Showdown preliminary event taking place one day earlier on Friday.

In previous years, the Sprint Showdown was held just prior to the all-star race for the Sprint Cup Series on Saturday night. The May 16 Sprint Showdown is now being scheduled to run right before the 200-mile Camping World Truck Series race.

Qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will be moved from Friday to Saturday. The qualifying format for the main event includes three laps around the 1.5-mile track and a mandatory four-tire pit stop.

Eighteen drivers are already eligible for the all-star race. The top-two finishers in the Sprint Showdown and the “Sprint Fan Vote” winner will secure the final three starting positions.

Jimmie Johnson won the all-star race for a record fourth time in 2013. Johnson also captured his sixth Sprint Cup championship last year.
