Beholder and Candy Boy post Breeders’ Cup workouts
Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Two-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder and Candy Boy were among those putting in Saturday workouts at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Richard Mandella, Beholder went seven furlongs in 1:23.80 under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
“She galloped out a mile in (one) 38 and looked really good,” Mandella said of the defending Distaff favorite. “She’ll have another work; I don’t know when or how long, but it won’t be like this.”
Beholder, champion 2-year-old filly of 2012 and last year’s champion 3-year- old filly, bounced back from a disappointing fourth in the Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park in June to win her second straight Zenyatta Stakes on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita.
Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Beholder is expected to face last year’s Distaff runner-up Close Hatches in the 1 1/8-mile race along with leading 3-year-old filly Untapable.
Candy Boy, trained by John Sadler, worked six furlongs under Corey Nakatani 1:10.40 in preparation for the Classic.
“He worked good. He worked in company and he got a fast three-quarters. We’ll decide by tomorrow (whether to pre-enter on Monday),” Sadler said.
Sprint contender Private Zone, two-time winner of the Vosburgh, worked six furlongs in 1:09.40 with his regular rider Martin Pedroza.
“He went good, but a little faster than I wanted him to go,” trainer Alfredo Velazquez said. “He’ll have one more breeze next Saturday. Then he’ll be ready for the money.”
Rich Tapestry, in from Hong Kong, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 with exercise rider Vincent Sit aboard. Trained by Michael Chang, Rich Tapestry upset Goldencents by a nose in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship in his American debut on Oct. 4.
“He went exactly according to plan,” said trainer Leonard Powell, at whose barn the 6-year-old gelding is residing until Chang returns from his Hong Kong base on Oct. 26. “We wanted to him to start easy and have a strong finish behind another horse (Romar Success). He did it very easily and the horse is pretty fit now, so from here on it’s about maintenance and keeping him happy.”
