YOUNGSTOWN ST. PENGUINS

Youngstown St. Penguins

Youngstown St. Penguins VS. Longwood Lancers

Longwood (2-1) vs. Youngstown State (1-2)

GAME NOTES: The Longwood Lancers will see what they have left in the tank when they take on the Youngstown State Penguins as part of the EMU Showcase at the EMU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.

Darrion Allen drilled a 3-pointer with 28 seconds to play, lifting Longwood to an 81-79 overtime victory against UNC Greensboro in the first part of this three-game event. The Lancers are now 2-1 overall, with a win over Averett (79-53) and a loss to James Madison (82-60) on the ledger. They will finish off their trip to Ypsilanti when they challenge host Eastern Michigan on Sunday.

Youngstown State has lost each of its last two games, and all three against Division I opponents this season. The Penguins were topped by host Eastern Michigan on Friday night (71-62), after losing to Central Michigan (75-63) last Tuesday. They will match up with UNC Greensboro in the final day of the event tomorrow.

This is the first meeting between these two programs.

The Lancers may have fallen behind by 10 points in the opening half against UNCG, but they chipped away to take an advantage of six points early in the second half. They only connected on 41.9 percent of their shots from the floor, but they forced 24 turnovers, which they traded in for 27 points. Netting 15 second-chance points didn't hurt either.

Allen finished with a game-high 22 points to carry Longwood over UNCG on Friday. He sank 7-of-14 shots from the floor, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Lotanna Nwogbo posted a double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds), Ryan Badowski netted 15 points, Shaquille Johnson added 13 and Leron Fisher tallied 12. Allen should continue to get the majority of the looks for the Lancers, as he leads the team in scoring (16 ppg) in three games. Badowski (15 ppg) has been fantastic off the bench, while Nwogbo (14.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Johnson (11.7 ppg, 4 apg) bring their own talents to the table.

Neither Youngstown State nor Eastern Michigan had much luck offensively on Friday. The Penguins shot at a 38.3 percent clip, which was just a hair behind Eastern Michigan (.385). The game was decided at the free-throw line and on the glass, with the Eagles owning edges of 23-8 and 47-26 in the two categories, respectively. Bobby Hain did score 15 points to lead four players in double figures for the Penguins.

Hain (14.3 ppg) is the leading scorer on the roster, despite taking only four shots from beyond the arc. Marcus Keene (13.8 ppg) has been more aggressive when it comes to launching shots from distance, as he has taken 34 from 3- point range this season. Unfortunately, he has made only 10 of those. Shawn Amiker (11.8 ppg) is the third member of the team averaging in double figures. Scoring options are severely limited on the rest of the roster, with DJ Cole (6.3 ppg) the fourth-best scorer.

It took everything Longwood had to take out UNC Greensboro. After such a tough test, the Lancers may be a bit sluggish just a day later. However, don't expect the Penguins to run away with this one.
