Recap: Xavier vs. San Diego
Fullerton, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Stainbrook tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as the Xavier Musketeers defeated the San Diego Toreros, 82-71, in the Wooden Legacy tournament at Titan Gym.
Trevon Bluiett paced the Musketeers (5-0) in the scoring column with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. J.P. Macura came off the bench to net 11 points, Remy Abell had 10 points and James Farr pulled down a game-high 10 boards. Xavier will advance to take on Tim Floyd's Texas-El Paso Miners in the second round of the tournament.
For San Diego (3-2), Johnny Dee poured in 20 points with the help of a 6-of-10 clip from 3-point range. Chris Anderson registered a double-double in the loss with 10 points and 11 assists. The Toreros will face Princeton in the tourney's loser's bracket on Friday.
Xavier sank 55.7 percent of its field goal tries in the first half. The Toreros went into the intermission trailing, 39-31, despite making good on 5- of-11 attempts from behind the 3-point line in the opening 20 minutes of the contest.
San Diego attempted to rally back in the second stanza, as it connected on 62.5 percent of its shots from the floor, including a 7-of-12 performance from beyond the arc. However, the Musketeers outscored their opponent, 8-3, at the free-throw line and also converted 7-of-12 tries from beyond the arc to extend its lead before the final buzzer.
Xavier dominated the glass, finishing with a 33-18 edge in total rebounds.
