Colorado (2-0) at Wyoming (2-0)
GAME NOTES: The Wyoming Cowboys continue their lengthy homestand at Arena Auditorium on Saturday, as they host the Colorado Buffaloes in non-conference action.
Wyoming, which is in the midst of a seven-game run at home before finally heading out for its first road game of the season versus SMU on Dec. 5, is undefeated after two contests. The campaign began with a 78-70 victory over Northern Colorado and continued with a 61-46 victory versus Western State earlier in the week.
As for the Buffs, they too are off to a 2-0 start to the 2014-15 season. The team has hosted both Drexel (65-48) and Auburn (90-59), and will be back in Boulder after this outing to play three straight before clashing with the Georgia Bulldogs on the road on Dec. 7
Wyoming leads the all-time series, a relationship that is more than a century old, by a count of 42-36. However, the Cowboys lost the most recent meeting last season in Boulder, 63-58.
Against Auburn, the Buffaloes played extremely well at both ends of the floor, holding the visitors to a mere 29.0 percent shooting effort, which included a dismal 5-of-27 effort behind the 3-point line. Offensively, Colorado converted 58.5 percent from the floor as it blew the Tigers out of the building.
Wesley Gordon registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Xavier Johnson and Josh Scott posted 17 points apiece. Scott also pulled down nine rebounds and blocked three shots as he clogged up the paint at the Coors Events Center.
Through two games, Scott is averaging a double-double with 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per outing, adding six blocked shots while shooting a sizzling 70.6 percent from the field. Gordon accounts for 12.5 ppg, as does Johnson, but while the former is hitting his field goal tries at an incredible 76.9 percent, the latter is converting at a 46.7 percent clip.
The Cowboys had an easy time of it against Western State, limiting the visitors to a mere 34.0 percent from the floor and fighting for a 34-23 advantage on the glass. Derek Cooke and Larry Nance both tallied 13 points, the latter pulling down a game-high eight rebounds, while Charles Hankerson put up 11 points and handed out six assists.
A complete team effort, the Pokes registered an impressive 21 assists on 24 made field goals, making it easier to get beyond the team's 13 turnovers in the meeting.
Nance is shooting 60.9 percent from the field through two games, resulting in a team-high 17.0 ppg to go along with 8.0 rpg. Hankerson (11.5 ppg) is also hitting his shots at an impressive rate (.615) and when he is not taking the shot himself he is seeking out teammates in scoring position, resulting in 11 assists.
Defensively, the Buffs have held their first couple of opponents to a feeble 29.0 percent shooting from the floor and 21.4 percent out on the perimeter. If they are able to keep that up this weekend, chances are the squad will remain undefeated.
