WOFFORD TERRIERS

Wofford Terriers

Wofford Terriers VS. UNC Greensboro Spartans

UNC Greensboro (11-21) vs. Wofford (25-6)

GAME NOTES: The top-seeded Wofford Terriers will get to finally take the court at the U.S. Cellular Center on Saturday afternoon, as they take on the eighth- seeded UNC Greensboro Spartans in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament.

The winner here will move into the semifinals on Sunday against either East Tennessee State of Western Carolina.

Wofford completed a clean sweep of the SoCon awards, as the Terriers captured the regular-season conference title, while also having the SoCon Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Mike Young's Terriers closed the regular season with five straight victories, finishing at 16-2 in league play and holding off Chattanooga, which won six straight down the stretch to finish at 15-3. Wofford is seeking its second straight SoCon tourney title after claiming last year's championship over Western Carolina (56-53). It marked Wofford's third tournament title all-time.

Wes Miller's Spartans weren't exactly on par with Wofford's success this season. UNCG finished the regular season with a mere 10 wins and was just 6-12 in conference play. That however, is in the past, as the Spartans topped Samford in a shootout in Friday's first round, 81-76. The Spartans own just one SoCon Tournament title and that came in 2001.

It was quite an offensive performance by both teams in the first-round matchup between UNCG and Samford. The Bulldogs shot .519 from the field, while the winning Spartans came in at a .492 clip. Six Spartans notched double figures in the victory, led by Diante Baldwin's 19 points. Tevon Saddler added 15 points, followed by Nicholas Paulos (13 pts), Kayel Locke (11 pts), Marvin Smith (10 pts) and RJ White (10 pts).

On the season, Saddler has been the straw that stirs the drink for UNCG, as the sophomore guard lead UNCG in both scoring (13.6 ppg) and assists (4.1 apg). He was named to the All-SoCon Third-Team. Scoring depth this season came in the form of Locke (12.5 ppg), White (12.0 ppg) and Paulos (10.7 ppg).

Wofford has enjoyed star power this season, starting with SoCon Player of the Year Karl Cochran. The senior guard tops the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg, thanks in large part to his 90 3-pointers, while ranking second on the team in rebounding (5.8 rpg). An All-SoCon First-Team selection, Cochran wasn't alone in garnering all-conference honors, as senior forward Lee Skinner (9.6 ppg, 6-0 rpg) and junior guard Spencer Collins (111.2 ppg) earned second and third team honors, respectively. An impressive team defensively, Wofford held opponents this season to a mere 59.9 ppg, while holding a +2.2 turnover margin.

It didn't come easy, but Wofford held off a charging Furman squad late to earn a two-point win in the season finale (62-60) and win the Southern Conference regular-season title. Skinner led the way with a season-high 17 points in the win. Cochran added 11 for Wofford, which won despite Furman shooting .500 from the floor compared to the Terriers' modest .408 effort. The big difference came at the free-throw line, where Wofford outscored the Paladins, 19-5.

The Terriers have already set a school record with 25 wins this season. Expect them to add to it, as they should be able to knock off the Spartans here.
