Iona (1-0) at Wofford (0-1)
GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers will try to collect their first win of the season on Tuesday morning when they face the Iona Gaels in a non-conference contest at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Iona is already in the win column, taking a 78-73 decision from Cleveland State in its season opener last Friday. The Gaels have been one of the better mid-major teams in the country recently, with five straight 20-win seasons. They will pay a visit to Wake Forest next.
Wofford traveled to face Stanford in its season opener, but it came home disappointed following a 74-59 loss. The Terriers earned their third NCAA Tournament invite in the last five seasons last spring. They will visit Fairfield next as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
Iona won the first-ever meeting between these programs last season, 76-55.
Led by four players in double figures, Iona was able to hold off Cleveland State in the season opener. The Gaels connected on 47.9 percent of their shots from the floor, including a 50 percent effort in the final 20 minutes. However, they were exposed inside, as they suffered from deficits of 32-20 and 16-2 in points in the paint and second-chance points, respectively.
Schadrac Casimir scored a game-high 20 points to pace Iona. He connected on 7- of-11 shots, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Iona knocked down 10-of-25 3-point tries as a team. A.J. English took more shots than any player for the Gaels and finished with 14 points, hitting 5-of-13 attempts. English wasn't overly selfish, however, as he also dished out six assists. Isaiah Williams and David Laury each added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Kelvin Amayo scored all eight bench points in the winning effort. Dublin was the only starter not to play at least 30 minutes.
Wofford put up fight against Stanford, but in the end it just wasn't meant to be. The Terriers connected on just under 45 percent of their total shots, although they did outscore the Cardinal, 18-3, from beyond the arc. However, that advantage was wiped out by a 33-25 deficit on the boards and 16 turnovers.
Jaylen Allen was the top scoring threat in the losing effort. He played 21 minutes off the bench and made 4-of-7 field goal tries and 2-of-3 attempts from the free-throw line to tally 12 points. Karl Cochran and Spencer Collins were the other double-digit scorers, each posting 11 points. Cochran did so on 4-of-12 shooting, while contributing five rebounds and five assists as well. Collins made 4-of-10 shots. Eric Garcia, Lee Skinner and C.J. Neumann joined Cochran and Collins in the starting lineup, although the trio managed only 14 points combined on 5-of-11 shooting.
Wofford should have an easier time putting points on the board in this contest. However, even with an improvement, the Terriers don't have the offensive firepower necessary to shoot down Iona.
