Recap: Western Mich vs. San Diego
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Connar Tava notched a game-high 23 points as the Western Michigan Broncos pulled off a last-second victory over the San Diego Toreros, 68-66, in the fifth-place game of the Wooden Legacy tournament at the Honda Center.
Tava hit 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line for the Broncos (5-2), who have won back-to-back games. David Brown tallied 14 points and seven assists. Tucker Haymond added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Johnny Dee knocked down 17 points to lead the Toreros (4-3), who have lost two of their last three. Jito Kok (15 points), Duda Sanadze (12) and Chris Anderson (10) also reached double figures.
The Toreros shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the first half, with the Broncos just below that mark at 48.3 percent. San Diego led 40-39 heading into intermission.
Both teams had difficulty knocking down field goals in the second half, with the Broncos shooting 36.4 percent and the Toreros just 33.3 percent. The Toreros held a 66-64 lead, but with 21 seconds left the Broncos tied it up on a Tava layup. After Anderson failed to hit either of two free throws, the Broncos ran the court and Brown's last-second layup sealed the dramatic win.
Western Michigan was aggressive in the paint, outscoring the opposition 34-24 and outrebounding them 36-29, coming out on top in a game which had 13 ties and 10 lead changes.
