San Diego (4-2) vs. Western Michigan (4-2)
GAME NOTES: For the second time this season and the second time during the Wooden Legacy tournament, the San Diego Toreros and Western Michigan Broncos will meet head-to-head as they battle at the Honda Center Sunday.
San Diego hosted Western Michigan at the Jenny Craig Pavilion not even a week ago in a regional qualifier for the Wooden Legacy tournament, which the Toreros won, 77-70. Now they clash at a neutral site in the consolation portion of the bracket.
Western Michigan, like San Diego, enters this contest sporting a 4-2 overall record, but has a head-to-head loss with San Diego already under its belt. The Broncos easily disposed of San Jose State, 79-60, in the team's last outing.
Six days ago the Toreros and Broncos met on the court for the very first time in their program histories. Now they meet for the second time ever, with San Diego owning that 1-0 series advantage after taking down WMU at home, 77-70.
San Diego was able to push ahead of Princeton in the team's last outing early in the first half thanks to 57.7 percent shooting from the floor, as the Toreros took a 40-28 lead into the intermission. The Tigers made somewhat of a comeback in the second half, but still ended up falling at Titan Gym in Fullerton, 75-65. San Diego was paced by Johnny Dee's 29-point outburst. The senior guard is averaging a monster 24.5 ppg in the Wooden Legacy tournament this season. Chris Anderson was the only other USD player to net a double- digit point total with 11, adding in seven assists.
Dee is off to a tremendous start to the 2014-15 campaign, leading his Toreros in scoring with a 21.8 ppg average on 50 percent shooting from the floor though six contests. San Diego as a unit is netting a respectable 72.8 ppg, largely thanks to Dee and Anderson, who comes in at second on the squad with a 10.3 ppg mark. Anderson was an assists machine last season, and he's on pace to be that strong point guard again, having dished out 52 assists to 20 turnovers already.
Just like San Diego, Western Michigan used a strong first half on both ends of the floor to create some separation between itself and San Jose State. The Broncos went ahead, 36-21, at the intermission and never looked back. Tucker Haymond had team highs in both scoring (20 points) and rebounding (eight boards) in the win over the Spartans. But the Broncos were also boosted by Connar Tava's 16 points, David Brown's 11-point contribution and Austin Richie's 10 points.
Through six games played, three Western Michigan players are averaging at least 14.5 ppg, with a fourth player following close behind that total. Richie leads the team with a 14.7 ppg average, followed very closely by Haymond and Tava, who each net 14.5 ppg this season. Brown, last season's leading scorer, checks in with a 13.5 ppg mark, and adds 14 steals to his resume. Tava leads the team in rebounding at 6.3 boards per outing. The team as a unit enters the clash with San Diego netting 77.3 ppg.
San Diego got the better of Western Michigan just a few days ago on its home floor, but with a neutral facility the Broncos could make up some of the difference. It will be an offensive battle between WMU's top four scorers and Dee's absurd scoring pace. This one should come right down to the wire.
