WESTERN KENTUCKY HILLTOPPERS

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers VS. Bowling Green Falcons

Bowling Green (4-0) at Western Kentucky (2-3)

GAME NOTES: Looking to extend an unbeaten 4-0 record on the season, the Bowling Green Falcons will travel to face the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a non-conference clash at E.A. Diddle Arena.

Bowling Green is a perfect 4-0 on the season, with recent wins over Southeast Missouri State (62-54) and Detroit (64-63), the latter of which was on the road. Now the Falcons must head to a different Bowling Green (Kentucky) to face the Hilltoppers.

Western Kentucky sits on a 2-3 record with the intention of getting back to .500. The Hilltoppers are coming off a huge 62-59 victory over Saint Joseph's at Madison Square Garden, which stopped a three-game losing streak.

These two programs have met 32 times on the floor, with Western Kentucky coming into the contest owning a commanding 22-10 all-time advantage. The two sides met last season almost on the same date, and Bowling Green came away with a 74-62 win.

It was an absolute thriller between Bowling Green and Detroit in Michigan in the Falcons' last contest. The Titans held a one-point advantage in the waning seconds after making a second-half comeback to grab the lead. But Richaun Holmes scored on a layup for Bowling Green as time expired to give the Falcons the crucial road victory, which allowed them to remain unbeaten. Holmes was the only BGSU player to record a scoring total in double figures, netting 26 points with a team-high 18 rebounds and five blocked shots. The Falcons shot just 38.6 percent from the floor which included a 6-of-21 mark from 3-point distance.

In four games this season, Holmes is the only Bowling Green player to register a scoring average in the double digits, entering the game against WKU netting 15.3 ppg. The big man is a defensive wizard in the paint, leading the team in both rebounding (9.3 ppg) and total blocked shots (16). Guard Jehvon Clarke is the next closest BGSU player to a double-digit point average, netting 9.0 ppg in four games, but with zero starts. Defensively, the Falcons are holding opponents to 57.5 ppg, and are scoring 68.2 ppg themselves.

Western Kentucky had a fairly large task in front of it in the team's last outing against Saint Joseph's, which made it to the NCAA Tournament last season and was defeated by eventual champion UConn. But the Hilltoppers held the Hawks to 37 percent shooting in the contest, while they made 43.1 percent of their field goal tries from the floor in the win. George Fant led the team with a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds, but the forward did turn the ball over six times. Chris Harrison-Docks chipped in with 12 points, and Trency Jackson added 11 points in the victory.

T.J. Price, one of the best players on the Hilltoppers last season, leads the team in scoring this season with a 13.0 ppg average. Harrison-Docks is the only other player for Western Kentucky to bring in a double-digit scoring average for WKU, netting 12.2 ppg. As a team, the Hilltoppers are scoring 63.4 ppg, but are allowing opponents to net 68.0 ppg. Fant tops the squad in rebounding, bringing down 7.4 boards per outing, while Price chips in with 5.4 rpg and a team-best 3.6 apg.

Western Kentucky gets a huge boost being at home, and the big win over Saint Joseph's should give the team even more confidence. The Falcons have a solid lineup with plenty of depth, but other players besides Holmes need to start contributing offensively. That should happen sooner rather than later, as Spencer Parker, Anthony Henderson and Chauncey Orr will all come into their own with more games under their belt.
