Recap: Washington St vs. Oregon

Pullman, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Hawkinson scored 26 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds as the Washington State Cougars managed to take down the Oregon Ducks in overtime, 108-99, in Pac-12 Conference action at Beasley Coliseum.

Hawkinson, who also handed out three assists and blocked a pair of shots, converted 12-of-14 at the free-throw line for the Cougars (9-7, 3-1 Pac-12), who registered their third straight win and the fifth in the last six outings. Also having strong offensive efforts for WSU were Davonte Lacy with 24 points, Ike Iroegbu 20 and Brett Boese 16 points off the bench as he converted 4-of-6 shots behind the 3-point line.

The Ducks (12-5, 2-2) were paced by Joseph Young who dropped in a game-high 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting from the field, followed by Elgin Cook who recorded a double-double consisting of 26 points and 10 boards. Before fouling out, Jalil Abdul-Bassit pitched in with 12 points off the bench and Dillon Brooks 11 as he too picked up five fouls in the contest.

Washington State shot a sizzling 72.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including 7-of-9 beyond the arc in the frame, but with the Ducks connecting on 55.3 percent from the field and 6-of-11 on the perimeter, the Cougars managed to claim only a five-point advantage at the break, 57-52.

In the second half Oregon improved to 57.1 percent accuracy from the floor, while predictably WSU took a tumble, knocking down only 42.3 percent of total field goals. However, the Cougars again shot the ball well on the perimeter (7-of-15).

Neither side led by more than five points in the second half and it took a layup by Cook with just under 30 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 94-94 and send the meeting into overtime.

In the extra session Cook gave the visitors a 98-96 edge just over a minute in, but then Washington State rattled off eight straight points to take control and eventually post the nine-point victory.

In a game that featured an incredible 18 ties and 23 lead changes, Washington State not only made good on 14-of-24 (.583) beyond the arc, it also outscored the visitors by a 28-14 margin at the free-throw line.
