Washington Huskies VS. UTEP Miners

Texas-El Paso (4-0) vs. Washington (5-0)

GAME NOTES: Meeting up in the championship game of the 2014 Wooden Legacy tournament, the Texas-El Paso Miners will clash with the Washington Huskies at the Honda Center Sunday in a battle for the title.

UTEP overcame a second-half deficit to defeat previously unbeaten Xavier, 77-73, on Friday to earn a spot in the championship contest. The Miners are 4-0 on the season, with two wins coming in the Wooden Legacy tournament already.

Washington enters this game with a 5-0 record, having easily defeated San Jose State (78-56) and Long Beach State (80-70) to earn the other spot in the title clash. The Huskies will return home for a three-game stint following the Wooden Legacy.

UTEP and Washington have met seven times on the basketball court prior to this clash. The Miners hold the all-time series lead, 4-3, with the last meeting of the teams coming back in 2002.

UTEP played exceptionally well against a team that entered Friday's contest netting over 88 points per outing in Xavier. The Miners shot 48.1 percent from the floor in the game, and used 15 second-half free throws to come back from a five-point deficit at halftime. C.J. Cooper led the way for UTEP with 22 points, but two players tallied double-doubles in the win. Vince Hunter registered 17 points with 12 rebounds, and Cedrick Lang notched 13 points with 10 rebounds. Earvin Morris rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 15 points.

Hunter, the sophomore forward who is coming off an outstanding freshman season with the Miners, leads the way for the team through four games played. Hunter checks in with a team-best 18.0 ppg, and brings in a 12.5 rpg mark for the double-double average. Lang isn't far off the double-double per game pace, netting 12.3 ppg and bringing down 8.3 rpg for UTEP, which averages 70.2 ppg as a whole. Cooper rounds out the trio of double-digit scorers for UTEP with an 11.8 ppg margin.

Long Beach State actually held a one-point lead over Washington at the half of the Huskies' last outing, but the Pac-12 Conference program made sure to erase that advantage in the second frame. Nigel Williams-Goss led the way for the Huskies in the comeback with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Mike Anderson contributed a healthy 16 points in the victory. Robert Upshaw came off the bench to chip in 12 points with seven boards, and Andrew Andrews rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Williams-Goss leads a trio of double-figure scorers this season for the Huskies through five games, netting 14.4 ppg with a team-best 39 assists on the young season. Shawn Kemp Jr. contributes 12.0 ppg for the Huskies, while Andrews tallies 11.0 ppg to round out the group. Anderson is just shy of the double-digit point club with an 8.4 ppg average, but the guard leads the team in rebounding at 6.6 boards per outing.

If UTEP can get past Xavier to reach the championship bout, the Miners can certainly handle a Washington team averaging 74.8 ppg this season. But the team must play solid defense against a very quick and very talented Huskies lineup, led by Williams-Goss and Kemp.
