Recap: Washington vs. San Jose St
Fullerton, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Donaven Dorsey scored 17 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Washington Huskies crushed the San Jose State Spartans, 78-56, in the first round of the Wooden Legacy tournament at Titan Gym.
Dorsey came off the bench to convert all but one of his six 3-point attempts for the Huskies (4-0), while fellow reserve Robert Upshaw made a huge impact as he not only tallied 12 points and five rebounds, he rejected seven shots in just 19 minutes of action as well. Starters Nigel Williams-Goss and Shawn Kemp Jr. responded with 13 and 11 points, respectively, the former handing out eight assists. Mike Anderson's 10 rebounds paced both sides.
The Spartans (1-4) were led by Rashad Muhammad with 15 points and Jaleel Williams with 11, but no one else on the roster made more than a pair of field goals.
The Huskies opened the meeting on an 8-0 run and it wasn't until there was more than five minutes gone by that SJSU finally got on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer. The Spartans shot a dismal 28.1 percent from the field in the first half, en route to a 40-23 deficit at the break.
In the second half the Huskies continued to pile on, even though they saw their shooting accuracy drop from 53.8 percent to 41.9. The squad also suffered a bit at the free-throw line (8-of-17), but SJSU was in no position to challenge for the win.
Washington, which held SJSU to only 30.6 percent from the floor on the night, will now take on Long Beach State in the second round of the tournament on Friday, while the Spartans tangle with Western Michigan in the next round.
