San Jose State (1-3) vs. Washington (3-0)
GAME NOTES: The final game of the night in the Wooden Legacy tournament's first round at Titan Gym features the San Jose State Spartans taking on the Washington Huskies.
San Jose State enters the tournament with a 1-3 overall record, having dropped three straight since a season-opening win. The Spartans are coming off a tight 70-66 defeat at Cal State Fullerton - where the Wooden Legacy is being played.
Washington is off to a hot start on the season, entering the tournament with a perfect 3-0 ledger. The Huskies took down South Carolina State to start the year, then defeated Seattle and, most recently, Pacific (76-69) to earn the unblemished record.
Washington and San Jose State have met twice on the hardwood in their series history, and the Huskies have come away victorious in both of those contests. The last matchup between the sides took place in Seattle during the 2009 season, where the Huskies won, 80-70.
San Jose State outscored Cal State Fullerton in the second half of the team's latest outing, 40-38, but it wasn't enough for the Spartans to come back from a six-point first-half deficit in loss. SJSU shot 41.9 percent from the floor in the contest, and went 9-of-23 from 3-point range. Jaleel Williams netted a team-high 16 points, while both Jordan Baker and Rashad Muhammed each chipped in with 11 points. Frank Rogers added 10 points with eight rebounds, and Jalen James contributed 10 points of his own.
Rogers leads a trio of San Jose State players in double-figure scoring this season, entering the Wooden Legacy netting an average of 11.7 ppg through four contests. Baker is close behind at 11.0 ppg, and Muhammed checks in just behind Baker with 10.5 ppg. As a unit, San Jose State is managing 61.2 ppg on just 39.7 percent shooting, while allowing 62.5 ppg to opponents. Rogers comes into the game with a 7.7 rpg mark for a team that is averaging a respectable 40.8 rpg.
Washington gained a seven-point lead over Pacific in the team's latest contest by the time intermission rolled around, and survived a second-half comeback attempt by the Tigers to hold on for the seven-point win. The Huskies buried 43.3 percent of their shot attempts from the floor, and went 17-of-24 from the free-throw line. Shawn Kemp Jr. netted a team-high 18 points for the Huskies, hitting 7-of-11 field goals from the floor. Both Nigel Williams-Goss and Andrew Andrews contributed 17 points to the winning effort, while Andrews chipped in seven rebounds.
Washington has prided itself on defense this season and the ability to hold opponents to low scoring totals through three contests. The Huskies enter the Wooden Legacy allowing just 58.7 ppg to challengers, while the team sports a 72.0 ppg average of its own. Kemp is at the top of the team's scoring leaderboard, netting 15.7 ppg on 60.6 percent shooting. Andrews checks in behind him with 13.7 ppg, and Williams-Goss is only a point behind Andrews at 12.7 ppg. With six players on the Huskies roster coming into the game against SJSU averaging at least 5.0 rpg, Washington has shown it's a feared team on the glass, bringing down 43.7 rpg as a unit.
San Jose State is in a bit of a rut, and needs an established leader to really take over the scoring duties. With Washington's aggression on the boards and three solid scoring threats, the Huskies should advance to the winner's bracket of the tournament.
