WASHINGTON HUSKIES

Washington Huskies

Washington Huskies VS. Pacific Tigers

Pacific (2-1) vs. Washington (2-0)

GAME NOTES: The Washington Huskies and Pacific Tigers will take to the floor at KeyArena on Sunday evening as they take on one another as part of the Marv Harshman Classic.

Lorenzo Romar's Huskies are sporting an unblemished record thus far, opening the 2014-15 campaign with a pair of decisive victories over South Carolina State (77-59) and Seattle University (63-48). Romar will pick up his 350th career victory with his team's next win.

Ron Verlin's Tigers are coming off a winning season last year (18-16), but with mass defections coming into the 2014-15 campaign, it may be a tough task indeed to repeat that. Still, Pacific has opened with wins in two of its first three games, sandwiching wins over Western Illinois (73-71 OT) and Pacific Union (81-56) around a loss at UC Irvine (68-50).

Washington has won six of the seven all-time meetings with Pacific, including a 72-54 decision in the last meeting in 2008.

Despite playing short-handed due to injuries suffered by starters T.J. Wallace and Gabriel Aguirre, Pacific was able to overcome and blow out Pacific Union on Thursday. The Tigers were able to shoot a sizzling .565 from the floor in the game, as three players notched double-digit point totals in the win. Forward Eric Thompson just missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Dulani Robinson completed the feat in his first start at the point, finishing with 10 points and 11 assists, while fellow guard Ray Bowles added 12 points to the cause.

The Tigers will be hard-pressed to produce at the same rate against the Huskies in this game. Through three outings, Pacific is averaging a modest 68.0 ppg on an efficient .450 shooting. Getting Wallace back on the floor is a must as he was averaging 16.0 ppg over the first two games. He is currently hobbled by a sprained ankle suffered late in the UC Irvine loss. Thompson (10.3 ppg) may have to take on more of a scorer's role like he did against Pacific Union.

The Huskies have played stellar defense in the early stages of the season, holding opponents to just 53.5 ppg, on .308 shooting that includes a meager .195 from behind the arc (8-of-41). The strong defense has masked rather modest offensive numbers. Still, through two games the team has four players in double-figure scoring, led by Shawn Kemp Jr. (14.5 ppg), Andrew Andrews is next in line (12.0 ppg), followed by Robert Upshaw (11.5 ppg) and Nigel Williams-Goss (10.5 ppg).

Washington shot just .373 from the floor against Seattle last time out, but held the host team to a horrific .286 shooting, including an ugly 3-of-21 showing from 3-point range. Offensively, four Huskies notched double digits in the win. Kemp and Quevyn Winters posted 12 points each in the win. Williams- Goss and Andrews were right behind with 11 points apiece.

Neither one of these teams has shown the ability to light up a scoreboard. Still, the Huskies have more depth, especially if Pacific continues to run at less than full strength.
