Princeton (5-8) at Wake Forest (7-6)
GAME NOTES: The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will clash Wednesday afternoon with the Princeton Tigers in a non-conference affair at LJVM Coliseum as they prepare to enter full-time conference play.
Princeton sports a 5-8 record on the season, but has won back-to-back contests against Lipscomb (77-55) and Liberty (65-47) to reach the five-win mark. The Tigers will hit the road to Winston-Salem in search of their first victory away from home this season (0-5).
Wake Forest has also been victorious in consecutive contests, having defeated Bucknell (60-53) and Richmond (65-63) in a pair of very close calls. The Deacons are 7-6 on the season, and are 5-3 at home so far with an 0-1 conference mark (loss to NC State earlier in the month).
This will be the fourth meeting between Princeton and Wake Forest on the basketball court. The Demon Deacons own a 2-1 all-time series lead, but these sides haven't clashed since the 2005-06 season - a 61-42 Demon Deacons' victory.
Princeton used a strong defensive effort to hold Liberty to just 37.5 percent shooting from the floor, including only 1-of-6 from 3-point range. The Tigers scored first and led from start to finish as they coasted past the Flames for their fifth win of the season. Steven Cook netted 16 points to pace the team, while Spencer Weisz added 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. Princeton connected on 10-of-32 shooting from 3-point range, and made 15-of-19 from the free-throw line in the win.
It's hard to made some headway in the Ivy League and build up a good record when a team's scoring average and points allowed average are the exact same. Princeton is netting 65.8 ppg this season on 43.5 percent shooting from the floor, while the Tigers surrender the exact same amount of points. Weisz leads the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg, and forward Hans Brase chips in 12.6 ppg with a team-best 7.8 rpg mark. Cook rounds out the Princeton trio of double-digit scorers at 10.5 ppg.
Devin Thomas scored nine points and led Wake Forest with 13 rebounds in Sunday's win over Richmond, but it was his last-second tip-in at the buzzer that was the most meaningful play for the Deacons in the contest that completed the comeback. Codi Miller-McIntyre scored 17 points with six assists to lead the team, while Dinos Mitoglou (11 points) and Greg McClinton (10 points) contributed to the narrow victory.
Wake Forest has relied heavily on Miller-McIntyre (13.4 ppg) and Thomas (10.7 ppg, team-best 9.7 rpg) through 13 contests this season, considering the next- closest Demon Deacon scorer is Mitoglou, who nets 7.9 ppg. Still, Wake Forest has been able to get by with a 69.5 ppg average on 41.9 percent shooting from the floor, and a 66.5 ppg mark allowed to opponents. The quality of wins for Wake is relatively low this season, and most losses have come against a talented team.
Wake Forest hasn't achieved much thus far in Danny Manning's first season at the helm. However, going against a Princeton team that just can't stack up with an Atlantic Coast Conference program, the Demon Deacons should be able to easily cruise to a third straight victory.
