Vermont (20-13) at ULM (23-12)
GAME NOTES: The ULM Warhawks extended their season with a stunning comeback on Monday and get right back to the hardwood on Wednesday when they host the Vermont Catamounts with a trip to the CBI finals on the line.
The winner will next take on either Seattle or Loyola-Chicago in the best-of- three championship series starting on Mar. 30.
Forgive the Warhawks if they're a bit lethargic after their quarterfinal victory at Mercer. They trailed by 15 at the break, went down by 20 early in the second half and somehow rallied for a 71-69 victory.
Tylor Ongwae tied a career high with 27 points and made ULM's final three field goals. He evened things on a late 3-pointer and put the team up for good with a fastbreak layup. Majok Deng recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, Nick Coppola contributed 11 points, and Jamaal Samuel secured 10 rebounds for the victors.
The tide completely turned in the second half, as the Warhawks connected on 45.5 percent of their field-goal tries, and held the Bears to just 24 percent shooting from the field with a 3-of-16 effort from beyond the arc.
Ongwae is the top scorer for ULM with 14.3 ppg, while Deng is second on the team with 10.2 ppg. Deng is also the Warhawks' top rebounder with 7.4 rpg. ULM scores 64.5 ppg and allows its opponents to score 60.2 ppg, which gives the Warhawks a plus-4.3 scoring margin. ULM has a .429 field-goal percentage and allows teams to convert just 37.9 percent of their tries from the field. Although the Warhawks connect on only 30.8 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc, opponents are only converting 29.3 percent of their 3-point tries.
Vermont toppled Radford 78-71 on Monday in the first home postseason game in school history. Trae Bell-Haynes led four Catamounts in double figures with 17 points thanks to a 7-of-10 showing at the foul line. Ethan O'Day contributed 16 points for Vermont, which also received 12 and 11 points from Kurt Steidl and Dre Wills, respectively.
There were 11 lead changes and eight ties in a tight first half, which ended with Vermont clinging to a 37-34 lead. The Catamounts never relinquished the lead from there, scoring the first seven points of the second half and going ahead up as many as 16.
They outscored the Highlanders, 21-13, at the free-throw line and hung on to extend their 20-win streak to seven straight seasons.
O'Day is the top scorer for the Catamounts with 12.3 ppg and is the only player on Vermont to average double figures. The Catamounts score 67.1 ppg and allow teams to tally 58.8 ppg, which gives Vermont a scoring margin of plus-8.3. The Catamounts convert an impressive 47.1 percent of their field- goal tries and allow opponents to connect on just 38.5 percent of theirs. Vermont is in the black in the rebounding margin (+1.7).
The first meeting between these programs has a lot riding on it, as a trip to a postseason title round will boast the perception of both programs considerably. ULM is riding high from Monday's comeback and is 13-3 at home this season. Vermont though, possesses just enough of a problem defensively to eke out a road win.
Vermont 65, ULM 60
