Recap: UCLA vs. UC Riverside
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Normal Powell netted 20 points on 8- of-11 shooting as the UCLA Bruins outlasted the UC Riverside Highlanders, 77-66, in a non-conference battle at Pauley Pavilion.
Tony Parker tallied a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds for UCLA (8-2), while Bryce Alford chipped in with 16 points of his own, adding in eight assists. Kevon Looney also notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, and Isaac Hamilton contributed 11 points in the win.
Steven Thornton scored 15 points to lead UC Riverside (5-4). Taylor Johns chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Jaylen Bland added 12 points. Steven Jones tallied 11 points with eight assists, and Nick Gruninger scored 10 in the loss.
Despite shooting just 35.3 percent from the floor in the first half, UC Riverside took a 36-28 lead into the intermission thanks to 7-of-17 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. UCLA connected on 43.5 percent of its tries in the frame.
The Bruins caught fire in the second half, netting 62.5 percent of their attempts from the field, and made 14-of-16 from the free-throw line to gain the lead. The Highlanders made just 29.4 percent of their shots in the period.
UCLA held a decisive advantage in points in the paint, 36-20, and outscored UC Riverside from the charity stripe, 21-11, in the win.
