UCLA BRUINS

UCLA Bruins

UCLA Bruins VS. UC Riverside Highlanders

UC Riverside (5-3) at UCLA (7-2)

GAME NOTES: The UCLA Bruins face the penultimate test of their four-game homestand Wednesday as they welcome the UC Riverside Highlanders at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA ran its record to 6-0 at home and 7-2 overall with a hard-fought 75-68 win over San Diego on Sunday. The Bruins' third straight win came on the heels of losing to North Carolina and Oklahoma in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Bryce Alford scored 22 points and Kevon Looney recorded a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds in the latest win for UCLA, which also received 16 points from Norman Powell.

Alford and Powell lead the Bruins' offense with both players averaging 17.7 ppg. Alford also ranks eighth in the nation in assists per game (7.0 apg) and has a nearly 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Looney ranked sixth in the nation in rebounding (11.2 rpg) coming into the week and pulls down nearly five offensive boards per game. The talented freshman is also putting up 14.1 ppg.

Stopping UCLA has been a tough task for most teams. The Bruins, despite lacking much depth, are netting a healthy 82.0 points per game while sinking 45.7 percent of their attempts from the floor.

The Bruins wrap up their homestand Saturday against No. 9 Gonzaga.

The Highlanders have also rattled off three straight wins, including a lopsided 88-62 rout of Portland State on Saturday.

Taylor Johns poured in 20 points in a balanced attack for the Highlanders, who had three more double-digit scorers and another with nine points. Jaylen Bland added 17 points, Steven Thornton finished with 14, Nick Gruninger chipped in with 12 and Steven Jones scored nine and dished out six assists.

UC Riverside had its way with a 64.8 percent shooting effort while dominating in the paint (44-26) and along the perimeter with a 27-6 scoring edge from 3- point distance.

Leading UCR's offensive attack is Johns with 15.5 ppg, while Bland sits close behind at 14.6. A healthy shooting percentage across the board has fueled the Highlanders thus far, as they are connecting on 48.0 percent from the field, 39.4 percent from the perimeter and 72.8 percent at the foul line.

UCLA already has two easy wins against Big West opponents this season, beating Cal State Fullerton by 28 and Long Beach State by 14. The Bruins have won all three meetings against the Highlanders and are playing at a different level at home. UCR's smooth start to the season is about to hit a roadblock.
