UCLA BRUINS

UCLA Bruins

UCLA Bruins VS. San Diego Toreros

San Diego (4-4) at UCLA (6-2)

GAME NOTES: In the second part of a four-game homestand, the UCLA Bruins will contend with the San Diego Toreros in a non-conference duel at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday.

San Diego has lost three of its last four games, including a 57-48 setback against cross-town rival San Diego State in its last outing. The Toreros are now 4-4 overall, with the loss against the Aztecs coming in their first true road game. They will battle UC Santa Barbara on the road next.

UCLA started this homestand with a 73-45 rout of Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday. The win was the second straight for the Bruins, who are now 6-2 overall, including a perfect mark at home (5-0). They will host UC Riverside next before a major test against Gonzaga next Saturday.

The Bruins have won two of three previous meetings with the Toreros, although San Diego claimed victory in the last contest, securing an 86-81 triumph at Pauley Pavilion in 2002.

In a low-scoring affair with San Diego State, Johnny Dee was the only Torero to reach double figures, finishing with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting. San Diego only made 36.5 percent of its shots from the floor in the contest, while being outscored from the free-throw line (13-4). The Toreros also suffered from a 38-30 deficit on the boards.

Dee (20.5 ppg) carries a heavy burden for San Diego. He is the only player on the entire team averaging more than nine points per game. His 16 points against San Diego State was the second-lowest output of the season, with his 14 points against Florida A&M the low point, although that came in 24 minutes during a 72-41 win. The second option in terms of scoring is Christopher Anderson (9 ppg, 8.4 apg), but his impact is more important as a distributor. Jito Kok (8.1 ppg) and Thomas Jacobs (7.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg) are other important pieces of the puzzle.

All five starters scored in double figures, led by Norman Powell and his 18 points, to carry UCLA past Cal State Fullerton. The Bruins knocked down 44.6 percent of their shots from the floor, while holding the Titans to 13 field goals and 24.1 percent shooting.

Stopping UCLA has been a tough task for most teams. The Bruins are netting a healthy 82.9 points per game, while sinking 45.4 percent of their attempts from the floor. On defense, UCLA has held the opposition to 38.9 percent shooting and an even 70 points per contest. The starting lineup does the bulk of the work, with Powell (17.6 ppg), Bryce Alford (17.1 ppg, 7.1 apg), Kevon Looney (13.6 ppg, 11.2 rpg), Isaac Hamilton (11.6 ppg) and Tony Parker (11.5 ppg) all reliable options, while bringing more than just simple scoring. Unfortunately, there isn't much support from the bench, with Thomas Welsh (5.8 ppg) one of only three reserves putting in more than a point per game.

Despite its lack of a proven bench scorer, UCLA should have enough firepower in this one to put up another victory.
