UCLA BRUINS

UCLA Bruins

UCLA Bruins VS. Cal. St.-Fullerton Titans

Cal State Fullerton (3-4) at UCLA (4-3)

GAME NOTES: After being demoted from the national rankings, the UCLA Bruins seek some form of redemption against the visiting Cal State Fullerton Titans on Wednesday night.

The Titans have not breathed the rarified air of the polls this season, with an overall mark of 3-4. They have won two of their last three games, all part of the Spartanburg Marriott Upstate Classic, including a 64-61 triumph against FIU last Saturday. They will host Pepperdine in their next outing.

A 4-0 start propelled UCLA to the No. 22 spot in last week's AP poll. The Bruins' inconsistent run in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, which featured losses against Oklahoma (75-65) and North Carolina (78-56), sent them out of the rankings this week, even though they did defeat UAB in the final phase of the tourney. This is the first installment of a four-game homestand for UCLA, which hosts San Diego next.

UCLA won the first nine meetings between these two teams, but the Titans claimed a win in the 10th and most recent, securing a 68-65 victory on the same floor this contest will be held on.

Alex Harris poured in a game-high 26 points to lift the Titans over FIU last time out. Cal State Fullerton held the Panthers to just 38.9 percent shooting in the contest, including a 2-of-13 effort from 3-opoint range. The Titans also squeaked out a 35-33 edge on the boards, while sinking 42.9 percent of their own field goal tries.

It has been slow going for the Titans on offense this season, as they are only netting 63.6 points per game, while shooting a shade better than 40 percent from the floor. Lanerryl Johnson (18.1 ppg) has not been the problem, as he is scoring at a higher rate than anyone else on the roster. Johnson had only 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting against FIU, after scoring at least 20 points in the previous three contests. Harris' (12.9 ppg) total against the Panthers was a season-high. Moses Morgan (10 ppg) rounds out the scoring threats for the squad, with Josh Gentry (6.7 ppg) the next-best option.

UCLA did many things right and many things wrong against UAB. On the positive side, the Bruins claimed a 46-37 edge on the glass, while holding the Blazers to 38.2 percent shooting. However, they were outscored, 24-21, from 3-point range, while turning the ball over 12 times to UAB's 10. Isaac Hamilton drained five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points to pace the Bruins.

Over the last few seasons, UCLA has made a habit of being one of the nation's better offensive teams. It appears set to continue that trend, averaging 84.3 points per game on a solid 45.6 percent shooting this season. The Bruins are doing a good job on the glass as well, tallying 43.4 rebounds per contest. The starting lineup is stacked with double-digit scorers, with all five starters averaging at least 11 points per game, led by Normal Powell (17.6 ppg) and Kevon Looney (14.1 ppg, 11 rpg). However, depth is an issue, with Thomas Welsh (6.3 ppg) the only reserve putting in more than three points per game.

Lacking many options off the bench may hurt UCLA in the future, but it won't be a problem against an inferior Cal State Fullerton squad.
