LSU (7-2) at UAB (4-6)
GAME NOTES: The LSU Tigers head to Bartow Arena for just their second true road game of the season, as they clash with the UAB Blazers in non-conference action on Thursday night.
The Tigers, who have lost just two games in nine opportunities, are currently enjoying a four-game win streak since bowing to Clemson last month by a score of 64-61 during the Paradise Jam. The team was in action last Saturday versus Sam Houston State and conquered the Bearkats by a final of 76-67 at the Maravich Center.
The Blazers have gotten off to a rough start in 2014-15, winning just four of the first 10 outings and not one of those victories has been a signature win. The squad was in action last Sunday, hosting UNC Asheville, and came away with a 79-71 triumph, the second in the last three outings.
LSU owns a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series between these two squads, the most recent meeting taking place in this same building almost a year ago to the day, as the Tigers claimed a comfortable 86-63 victory.
LSU held the Bearkats to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field in the first half and 34.2 percent for the entire game, yet the Tigers didn't exactly cruise to the victory due to the fact that they connected on only 42.6 percent from the floor themselves. Jordan Mickey dominated the paint for the hosts with his 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots, all of which were game highs. Jarell Martin tallied 14 points, as well as three blocks, while Keith Hornsby and Tim Quarterman pitched in with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
A starter in all eight games in which he has appeared, Mickey is not only the leading scorer at the moment with 16.3 ppg, he is also averaging a double- double thanks to 10.1 rpg, an effort that has boosted the team's rebounding margin to nearly five per contest. Martin (15.9 ppg), Hornsby (12.7 ppg), Quarterman (11.8 ppg) and Josh Gray (11.1 ppg) are the primary scoring threats, with no one else on the roster producing more than 3.3 ppg.
The Blazers shot 41.7 percent from the floor during the meeting with UNC Asheville, including a dismal 4-of-17 (.235) behind the 3-point line, but they saved themselves by outscoring the visitors at the foul line by a 27-13 margin. Robert Brown, the lone double-digit scorer for UAB with 19 points, adding six rebounds and six assists, missed all five of his attempts beyond the arc.
As was the case in the recent game versus the Bulldogs, Brown is also the only double-digit scorer on the season for the Blazers, accounting for 12.4 ppg as he shoots 38.9 percent from the field and a dismal 28.8 percent out on the perimeter. As a group, the Blazers have made good on just 29.9 percent of their opportunities on the outside, limiting their scoring output to 66.5 ppg, compared to 69.1 ppg for the competition.
With very little scoring punch this season, the Blazers are doomed to come out on the losing end of quite a few games, with this one being the next on the list.
