GAME NOTES: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane look to extend a three-game win streak as they entertain the Houston Cougars in an American Athletic Conference tilt at Reynolds Center Sunday.
Tulsa enters the fray sporting an 8-5 record on the season, with a 1-0 mark in AAC play. The Golden Hurricane have won three consecutive games over Missouri State (74-70), Incarnate Word (76-47) and UCF (56-54), and are 5-2 at home this season.
Houston's two-game win streak ended with a 73-54 defeat at the hands of Memphis in the Cougars' AAC opener Wednesday. Houston enters this clash against Tulsa owning a 7-5 record on the season, but is just 1-2 away from home.
This meeting between Houston and Tulsa will be the 45th in history. The Golden Hurricane own a slim 23-21 all-time lead in the head-to-head matchups, including wins in three straight contests.
The Cougars struggled offensively against Memphis, as they shot just 31.3 percent from the floor in the nearly 20-point loss. Devonta Pollard scored 17 points to lead Houston, while Jherrod Stiggers also chipped in with 11 points in the defeat. LeRon Barnes pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds for the Cougars, who at least kept pace with the Tigers on the boards (40-39).
Houston's lineup has been hit or miss for the large part of the season. The Cougars enter this matchup against Tulsa averaging 70.5 ppg, but the team is connecting on just 39 percent of its shots from the floor. Stiggers leads the team in scoring, netting 16.8 ppg this season with a team-best 33 assists. Pollard comes in at second on the squad with a 12.7 ppg mark, adding in 7.6 rpg to lead the Cougars. Both Eric Weary Jr. and L.J. Rose (only played in five games) average 10.0 ppg to round out the Cougars' double-digit scorers.
Tulsa and UCF battled back and forth for the better part of the second half before the Golden Hurricane came away with a tight 56-54 victory in conference play. Neither team shot the ball especially well from the field, as Tulsa connected on 38.1 percent of its shots, which included a dismal 2-of-15 mark from 3-point range. Shaquille Harrison tallied 22 points to leads the Golden Hurricane, while James Woodard added 14 points in the winning effort.
It's been Harrison and Woodard this season for the Golden Hurricane, paving the way offensively. Harrison leads Tulsa in scoring with 14.8 ppg, but Woodard isn't far behind with 14.7 ppg. As a unit, Tulsa is scoring 66.0 ppg this season on 42.1 percent shooting. The next closest scorer to double figures for Tulsa is Marquel Curtis, who chips in 8.5 ppg. Rashad Smith pulls down a team-best 6.4 rpg, and Harrison's 3.6 apg mark is the best this year for the Golden Hurricane.
Neither team will be an easy beat in this one, but Tulsa gets the big advantage playing this contest at home. The Golden Hurricane have been dominant recently in the series, but Houston has been several close calls away from an impressive record. With Harrison and Woodard leading the way, Tulsa will have the edge in this one.
