Fresno State (3-6) at Texas Tech (5-1)
GAME NOTES: For the first time since 1996, Fresno State and Texas Tech will square off on the hardwood as the Red Raiders welcome the Bulldogs to United Supermarkets Arena for a non-conference tilt.
Fresno State has won two straight since ending a five-game slide. The Bulldogs are coming off last Saturday's 63-61 triumph at CSU Bakersfield for their first road win of the season.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech is in the midst of an eight-game homestand and remains unbeaten through five games in Lubbock. The Red Raiders have been idle since last Wednesday's 46-44 victory over Auburn.
Texas Tech leads the all-time series, 3-1.
The Bulldogs got a season-high 29 points from Marvelle Harris in their recent win over CSU Bakersfield. The junior guard also tallied six rebounds and five assists and went 10-of-10 at the foul line. With the score tied, 61-61, Harris calmly drained a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to play in regulation after CSUB was assessed a technical foul. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 23- of-27 at the charity stripe as they overcame a nine-point, first-half deficit.
On the season, Harris currently leads the Mountain West Conference in scoring (16.4 ppg) and minutes played (327 minutes, 36.3 mpg) and ranks in top-10 in rebounds (6.1 rpg), assists (3.4 apg) and steals (1.5 spg). Julien Lewis (13.3 ppg), Paul Watson (11.4 ppg) and Karachi Edo (11.0 ppg) round out the team's double-digit scorers.
The Red Raiders boast a similarly balanced squad, led by Devaugntah Williams and his 11.8 ppg. The junior guard is shooting an efficient 55 percent from the floor and has knocked down 14-of-22 3-pointers (.636). Senior guard Robert Turner is averaging 10.8 points and 1.7 steals per contest, while big man Norense Odiase is posting 10.5 ppg and 6.2 rpg while shooting 64 percent from the field. Defensively, Texas Tech has held opponents to 39.9 percent shooting.
Last Wednesday's matchup with Auburn was a defensive battle, which the Red Raiders won by holding the Tigers to a collective 36-percent effort from the field. With their perimeter game struggling (1-of-9 from 3-point range), the Red Raiders turned to Odiase, who turned in a team-best 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Toddrick Gotcher contributed 12 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Red Raiders have yet to lose at home, but they must limit Harris considering they do not have an offensive threat who can match him bucket for bucket.
