Alabama (11-3) at Tennessee (9-4)
GAME NOTES: Coming off a five-game homestand where they won all five games, the Alabama Crimson Tide will hit the road Saturday to face the Tennessee Volunteers in an SEC clash at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Alabama is 11-3 on the season with five consecutive wins under its belt. For the first time since a Dec. 16 loss to Wichita State though, the Tide will be on the road, where they are 0-2 on the season. Alabama easily downed Texas A&M in its last outing, 65-44, on Tuesday.
Tennessee is also on a five-game win streak, with its most recent victory (a 61-47 win over Mississippi State) coming on the road. The Vols are a perfect 7-0 at home this season, and are 1-0 in SEC play as well.
Alabama leads the deep rivalry against Tennessee, 76-67. The last time these squads clashed on the court was last February, a game the Volunteers won, 76-59.
Alabama routed Texas A&M on Tuesday night, as the Crimson Tide held the Aggies to just 30.8 percent shooting from the floor, which included a 6-of-22 mark from 3-point range. Texas A&M was also heavily outscored from the free-throw line, 18-6, in the contest. Ricky Tarrant was responsible for 15 points, which led the Crimson Tide. Retin Obasohan added 12 points, Michael Kessens added 10 and Levi Randolph also chipped in 10 in the win. Both Kessens and Randolph grabbed team highs in rebounds as well, each with nine in the lopsided victory.
It's already been a season to remember for Randolph, who leads the Crimson Tide in scoring coming into Saturday with 15.7 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the floor. His 5.1 rpg is third on the squad, and his 40 assists is the most in the category on the team. Tarrant, who nets 13.2 ppg, and Rodney Cooper, at 10.5 ppg, are the team's other two double-digit scorers this season. The Crimson Tide have built their season already around a strong scoring offense that averages 71.6 ppg, although the Tide are making just 29.9 percent of their tries from 3-point distance. Alabama is also only allowing 63.4 ppg to opponents in the team's 14 games played.
Tennessee only connected on 35.4 percent of its field-goal tries in the team's game against Mississippi State, but that was all the Volunteers needed. The Bulldogs could only make 30.6 percent of their shots from the floor, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range and 24-of-44 from the free-throw line in the loss. Kevin Punter netted 15 points to pace Tennessee, while Josh Richardson added 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Devon Baulkman chipped in 10 points and six boards in the win. The Vols made 10-of-20 from beyond the 3- point arc.
Alabama's Randolph has a serious challenge in the team he is facing Saturday, as Richardson for Tennessee brings in 16.1 ppg to the clash, which is the highest mark on the Vols this season. Richardson's 48 assists is another team best, and 29 steals also tops the squad. Punter contributes 10.8 ppg and is the only other Tennessee player in double-figure scoring. The Vols have been a bit underwhelming on the offensive end this season save than Richardson, netting 65.9 ppg as a unit on 44.2 percent shooting. Still, the team is surrendering just 62.8 ppg to opponents, and will look to build on its 7-0 home mark and five-game win streak with another strong all-around effort.
It seems like there's a fairly significant drop in production from Richardson to the rest of the roster, while Alabama has those holes filled in nicely. Tennessee, though, may be able to end the Tide's win streak thanks to a strong fan base at Thompson-Boling Arena.
