UNLV (2-1) vs. Temple (2-1)
GAME NOTES: Two teams aiming for a quick turnaround meet up in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the Barclays Center on Saturday evening, as the UNLV Runnin' Rebels meet up with the Temple Owls.
Fran Dunphy's Owls opened the season with a pair of victories at home against American (40-37) and Louisiana Tech (82-75), but the momentum was halted by fourth-ranked Duke on Friday in this event, as Temple dropped a 74-54 decision to the Blue Devils.
Dave Rice's Rebels also opened with a pair of home games in earlier round action of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic and won both by narrow margins. The Rebels edged out Morehead State in the season opener (60-59) and did the same against Sam Houston State (59-57) two days later. The team was no match for Stanford on Friday however, as the Cardinal rolled over the Rebels, 89-60.
UNLV has won four of the previous five meetings with Temple. The last matchup took place in Philadelphia in 1990, an 82-76 victory for the Rebels.
The Rebels couldn't keep pace with the Cardinal on Friday, as Stanford shot 50 percent from the floor and a scorching 14-of-20 from behind the arc in routing UNLV. The Rebels meanwhile, could only convert 37.9 percent from the field in the lose. The performance of Christian Wood was the only real bright in an otherwise miserable performance, as he posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in defeat. Patrick McCaw came off the bench to tally 10 points, but there wasn't much support after that.
The offensive numbers through three games don't look good for UNLV, which averages just 59.7 ppg on a mere .387 shooting. The shooting woes extend beyond the arc (.286) and include the foul line as well (.534). Rashad Vaughn struggled in the loss to Stanford (7 pts), but still leads the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg. Wood is second in the scoring column at 10.3 points per game and is averaging a near double-double with a team-best 9.7 rebounds per game.
The Owls have shown a couple of different looks in the early stages of the season. The opener was a defensive struggle with American, while the second game showed offensive prowess. Despite getting physical with Duke on Friday, the Owls once again struggled offensively. As a result, the team is now averaging just 58.7 ppg and doing so on a mere .348 shooting. The team has really had a tough time finding any long-range acumen, converting just 10- of-43 3-point attempts (.233). There is varied scoring on the roster though, with four players currently in double figures. Will Cummings leads the way at 15.0 ppg. Quenton DeCosey and Josh Brown are next at 10.7 ppg each, while Daniel Dingle chimes in with 10.3 ppg.
Temple did a nice job holding Duke to a mere .391 shooting effort and was especially troublesome for Duke's star freshman center Jahlil Okafor, holding him to a 7-of-20 shooting night. However, in the end, the Owls committed 17 turnovers and went just .373 from the floor in a 20-point loss. Cummings led three Owls in double figures with 18 points. Brown came off the bench to tally 11 points, while DeCosey finished with 10.
Neither team is electric on the offensive end of the floor, but Temple has shown a little more firepower albeit not much more. In what should be a low- scoring affair, the Owls should be able to prevail.
