Mississippi State (5-0) vs. TCU (6-0)
GAME NOTES: The TCU Horned Frogs and the Mississippi State Bulldogs will battle it out to determine which program is crowned the champion of the 2014 Corpus Christi Coastal Classic Saturday at American Bank Center.
TCU enters the contest with a perfect 6-0 record on the season, having played almost every game at home this season save for Friday's 57-49 victory over Bradley, which earned the team a spot in the tournament title bout.
The same is true for 5-0 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs played every game in Starkville up until Friday's showdown with Saint Louis, which Mississippi State won by a landslide 75-50 margin.
These two squads have only met three times on the hardwood in their history, with TCU owning the 2-1 all-time advantage. They clashed last season in Starkville, which resulted in a 71-61 TCU victory.
The Horned Frogs didn't have their best game offensively Friday against Bradley, especially from 3-point range, where the team shot just 2-of-16 from deep. But the team was able to net 25 points from the free-throw line, and hold the Braves to just 35.7 percent shooting in the win. Kyan Anderson scored a team-best 10 points for TCU, while Kenrich Williams added another 10 points. They were the only double-digit scorers for TCU in the contest.
The 57 points for TCU Friday against Bradley was well below the team's season average, and now entering the contest against Mississippi State, the Horned Frogs are netting 79.2 ppg, even considering the 57-point blip. Anderson is the only TCU player to average a double-digit scoring average though, netting 14.5 ppg on 50.9 percent shooting from the floor. Williams is the next closest to reaching double figures, contributing 8.7 ppg on 60.6 percent shooting. Karviar Shepherd tops the team in rebounding, bringing down 7.3 boards per outing.
Mississippi State simply dominated Saint Louis in Friday's contest, as the Bulldogs held the Billikens to 36.4 percent shooting in the game while they themselves connected on 55.6 percent from the floor. Travis Daniels netted a team-high 21 points with six rebounds in the win, and Gavin Ware chipped in with 16 points and five boards. Fred Thomas rounded out the team's double- digit scorers in the contest with 14 points for the Bulldogs.
The scoring gap between Mississippi State and its opponents is quite large. The Bulldogs enter the game against TCU averaging a respectable 72.0 ppg, but the team's defense has been spectacular in limiting opponents to just 56.6 ppg. Ware and Roquez Johnson are right up at the top of the team's scoring leaderboard, netting 14.4 and 14.2 ppg, respectively. Thomas rounds out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs, contributing 13.2 ppg. Along with leading the team in scoring, Ware tops the squad with a 7.6 rpg mark.
TCU needs to kick its offense into overdrive again if the Horned Frogs want to stay with a talented Mississippi State team. The Bulldogs will need to utilize that strong scoring defense and do what Bradley did on Friday - outrebound and contest shots. If Mississippi State can gets its offense going for the second day in a row, this game should belong to the Bulldogs.
