Princeton (3-6) at Saint Peter's (3-6)
GAME NOTES: The Princeton Tigers begin a brief two-game road swing with a visit to the Yanitelli Center for non-conference action against the Saint Peter's Peacocks.
This will be just the second meeting between Princeton and the Peacocks in history. The Tigers defeated SPU, 57-36, when these in-state schools collided 36 years ago in Jadwin Gym.
Princeton picked up its second win in three games on Saturday as it downed Stony Brook, 77-64, at home. The Tigers are still three games below the .500 mark after nine games despite the recent surge. Fourth-year head coach Mitch Henderson has been extremely successful during his tenure at his alma mater and enters this contest with a 61-38 career record. Princeton is ranked third among Ivy League schools in both scoring offense (70.6 ppg) and scoring defense (64.4 ppg). The Tigers are also second in their conference in scoring margin (+6.2) despite the losing record.
Spencer Weisz (14.9 ppg, 3.2 apg), Hans Brase (12.4 ppg, 8.8 rpg) and Steven Cook (11.0 ppg, 1.7 spg) are all carrying double-digit scoring averages for Princeton. Cook stepped up his play versus Stony Brook as he tallied 28 points and seven steals to lead the squad. Pete Miller added 12 points, while Brase nearly registered a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Weisz will be looking to bounce back after hitting on only 1-of-8 shots from the floor. The Tigers were impressive overall as they converted 46.9 percent of their field goal tries, including 12-of-26 from beyond the arc, and 19-of-25 at the charity stripe against the Seawolves.
SPU ended a two-game slide with a 70-59 road win at Boston on Saturday. The Peacocks are 3-6 overall, but just 0-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Coach John Dunne's team is leading the MAAC in scoring defense with an allowance of only 58.7 ppg, but is ranked ninth in the 11 team league in points per game at 59.6. SPU is just 1-3 at the Yanitelli Center in 2014-15.
The Peacocks' stifling defense was on display versus the Terriers, who were limited to under 40 percent efficiency from the floor and sank only 8-of-26 tries from beyond the arc. Marvin Dominique led SPU, which sank 61.4 percent of its field goal attempts, with 22 points and 10 boards. Trevis Wyche handed out 10 assists, while Quadir Watson added 16 points and eight rebounds in the balanced effort. Dominique is ranked sixth in the MAAC in scoring (15.9 ppg) and second on the glass (9.2 rpg). The Peacocks could receive a huge boost from the return of senior guard Desi Washington, who has not played since spraining his wrist in the season opener at Brown. Washington netted 13.5 ppg in 2013-14 and was expected to be the go-to-guy offensively for SPU this season.
Although the homecourt advantage has not been too much of a factor for the Peacocks this season, the return of Washington could be enough to help SPU fend off the Tigers. Princeton really struggles outside of Jadwin Gym with losses to George Mason, Lafayette and Fairleigh Dickson. These teams are fairly even, which means a blowout either way would be surprising.
