Tulsa (11-5) at South Florida (7-10)
GAME NOTES: The South Florida Bulls will try to end a two-game losing streak on Saturday when they host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in American Athletic Conference play at the Sun Dome.
Tulsa enters the contest on a six-game win streak, with the most recent victory being a 66-58 win over UConn on Tuesday. The streak has bumped Tulsa's league record to 4-0 and overall mark to 11-5.
After starting the new year with a victory over East Carolina, the Bulls have dropped two straight, including a 56-51 overtime loss to Tulane last Sunday. South Florida now holds a league ledger of 1-3, and an overall record of 7-10.
This game marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs on the hardwood.
The Golden Hurricane connected on 46.8 percent of its field goal attempts against UConn, and held the Huskies to a .431 field goal percentage to secure its fourth conference win of the season. Tulsa also forced 15 turnovers, which led to 20 points. James Woodard led the Golden Hurricane in scoring and rebounding with 21 points and six boards. Rashad Smith and Shaquille Harrison added to the scoring effort by each netting 12 points.
Harrison is the top scorer for Tulsa with 15.4 ppg (fourth in the AAC), while Woodard is right behind him with 15.2 ppg (fifth). Smith is the team's leading rebounder with 6.6 rpg (sixth in the AAC). Tulsa is netting 66.2 ppg and connecting on 42.4 percent of its field goal tries. Defensively, the Golden Hurricane is allowing 61.5 ppg, and holding opponents to .424 shooting percentage. Tulsa is in the black in both rebounding (+3.3) and turnover margin (+1.38).
South Florida made just 35.6 percent of its field goal attempts during its loss to Tulane, including a poor 2-of-7 mark in overtime. The Bulls held Tulane to a .208 shooting percentage in the first half, but allowed the Green Wave to make 42.1 percent after the break. USF also didn't help its cause any by turning the ball over 19 times. Corey Allen Jr. (13 points), Bo Zeigler (12 points) and Troy Holston Jr. (11 points) all netted double figures for the Bulls, while Ruben Guerrero pulled down 11 rebounds.
Allen Jr. leads USF in scoring with 15.5 ppg (third in the AAC), while Chris Perry is second on the team in scoring with 11.6 ppg and first in rebounding with 7.4 rpg (third in the AAC). The Bulls rank near the bottom in the league in both scoring offense (65.2 ppg) and scoring defense (68.8 ppg), putting them in the red for scoring margin (-3.6, last in the AAC). USF is also last in 3-point field goal percent defense (.370). The Bulls are however, near the top of the conference in field goal percentage (.451).
South Florida hasn't scored more than 58 points since Dec 28. Tulsa meanwhile, has netted more than 58 four times during its current win streak. Expect the Golden Hurricane's win streak to continue against a struggling Bulls squad.
