Bowling Green (6-3) at South Florida (6-6)
GAME NOTES: After finally putting a stop to a five-game losing streak, the South Florida Bulls will try to string a pair of wins together as they play host to the Bowling Green Falcons at the Sun Dome in non-conference play.
Bowling Green opened the 2014-15 season with a 4-0 record, but has since fallen three times in the past five games. The Falcons have lost two of their last three, which includes an 82-68 defeat at the hands of Ferris State.
South Florida started the new season with a 5-1 record, but the Bulls went on to lose their next five straight to fall to 5-6. The team finally got out of the losing column after a 78-63 defeat of Southeastern Louisiana two days before Christmas, and will search for its second straight victory in this one.
This meeting for Bowling Green against South Florida is the third in the last three years. Overall, it's the fourth contest between the sides, as USF enters the clash owning a 3-0 all-time mark against the Falcons. BGSU dropped a 75-61 clash last season at home to the Bulls.
Bowling Green and Ferris State were just about even midway through their last outing, as Ferris State owned a slight 37-36 lead over the Falcons as the teams broke for halftime. But it was a 58.3 shooting percentage in the second half by the visitors that allowed them to move past BGSU to take the victory. Richaun Holmes nearly missed a double-double with 26 points and nine rebounds, as the senior forward led the Falcons in both categories. Jehvon Clarke netted 13 points off the bench, and Zack Denny contributed 10 points in the losing effort.
Holmes is the centerpiece of a returning cast for the Falcons this season that performed well on the court, but didn't have the record to show for it last season. Holmes leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 ppg with a team-best 9.1 rpg mark and 21 blocked shots. Denny (9.8 ppg) and Clarke (9.3 ppg) are both on the cusp of joining Holmes in double digits. As a unit, Bowling Green is netting 64.0 ppg this season on 42 percent shooting.
South Florida's dominant win over Southeastern Louisiana was just what the doctor ordered for a struggling Bulls team that had lost five in a row. USF connected on 54.4 percent of its shots from the field in the game, and registered four double-digit scorers against the Lions. Corey Allen Jr. led the team with 19 points in the win, while Nehemias Morillo and Anthony Collins each contributed 12 points for the Bulls. Chris Perry added 10 points and eight boards in the win.
USF has only battled to an even 6-6 record this season, but the Bulls are 5-2 when playing at home. The team has strong some strong points offensively, netting 69.7 ppg on 46.8 percent shooting (led by Allen's 16.9 ppg mark). But the Bulls have really struggled defensively, allowing opponents to score 70.2 ppg, and hit 36.6 percent from 3-point distance. Chris Perry (12.2 ppg) and Morillo (10.2 ppg) round out the trio of USF double-digit scorers this season.
Sure, USF went through an extremely rough patch with five straight losses, but the level of competition the Bulls had to endure was extreme. Bowling Green couldn't even keep it within 10 points against Ferris State, so for the Falcons to head out on the road now seems like bad timing.
