Seattle Redhawks VS. Pepperdine Waves

Pepperdine (18-13) at Seattle (16-15)

GAME NOTES: The College Basketball Invitational's first-round on Wednesday concludes with a matchup featuring the Pepperdine Waves and the Seattle Redhawks at the Connolly Center, with KeyArena unavailable.

The winner moves on to the next round of the tournament, where the winner of Gardner-Webb and Colorado will be waiting.

Pepperdine had an up-and-down season in the West Coast Conference, and enters the CBI with an 18-13 overall record. The Waves were dropped by eventual WCC champion Gonzaga, 79-61, in the semifinals of the league tournament. This is Pepperdine's first appearance in the CBI bracket.

The same goes for Seattle. The Redhawks are appearing in a Division I postseason tournament for the first time in 46 years, and will try to overcome a tough 80-61 loss to New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference championship.

This will be the 33rd meeting all-time between Pepperdine and Seattle. The Redhawks own a 20-12 advantage in head-to-head matchups with the Waves, the last coming in 2012. Seattle won that clash by a, 81-70 margin in Seattle.

The Waves were easily struck down by Gonzaga in the WCC semifinal matchup nearly two weeks ago, and not surprisingly. The Bulldogs shot 52.5 percent from the floor and converted on 8-of-17 from beyond the 3-point arc in the win, even though they missed 10 shots from the free-throw line. Pepperdine didn't perform horribly, though, connecting on 43.1 percent of its field-goal attempts in the loss. Stacy Davis netted 15 points to pace the team, adding in seven rebounds to his resume. Jeremy Major collected 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field in his team's third loss to Gonzaga this season.

Davis has been the backbone for the offense this season, as the junior forward leads the squad into the CBI netting 15.9 ppg on 47.5 percent shooting from the floor. His 7.8 rpg is also the best mark there is for the Waves. Jett Raines is the team's only other double-digit scorer, however, managing 10.9 ppg entering this clash. Major (8.6 ppg) has dished out a team-best 112 assists and recorded 47 steals for the Waves, who are scoring 63.7 ppg. The success for Pepperdine has come on the defensive end of the floor, where the Waves limit opponents to 61.6 ppg.

New Mexico State was the clear-cut favorite to take the WAC title yet again, and the Aggies made sure they didn't leave any doubt in their win over Seattle. NMSU gained an 11-point lead over the Redhawks by the time the teams broke for the intermission, and the Aggies coasted through the second half to victory over helpless Seattle. Jadon Cohee netted 16 points to pace the Redhawks in the loss, while William Powell tallied 14 points with eight rebounds. Isiah Umipig chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists in the loss, which was the second against New Mexico State this season.

Umipig leads the charge for the Redhawks offensively, netting 17.0 ppg on 42.1 percent shooting entering the tournament. He's followed by Jarell Flora, who tallies 13.6 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer for Seattle. Both players are connecting on greater than 40 percent of their 3-point attempts. Seattle has made it work offensively despite averaging a mediocre 62.6 ppg. That's because the defense has done its part, limiting the opposition to 62.0 ppg on 40.1 percent shooting. That will have to continue for the team against a strong Pepperdine offense.

The Waves will need Davis, Major and Raines to all be on point against a tough Seattle team. The Redhawks get the homecourt advantage, and if Umipig, Powell and Flora are all on the same page, this Seattle team can be exceptionally dangerous.

Predicted Outcome

Seattle 67, Pepperdine 63
