Pepperdine (2-0) at San Jose State (1-1)
GAME NOTES: A couple of teams from the Golden State get together on Wednesday night, as the San Jose State Spartans host the Pepperdine Waves in non- conference action.
The Spartans, who are members of the Mountain West Conference these days, are finishing off a three-game homestand that has seen them split the first two games of the campaign. The squad began with a 67-44 thrashing of Bethesda last Friday, but then went down in overtime against Portland two days later, 73-68.
San Jose State, which leads the all-time series between these squads by a 25-21 margin, will play on the road for the first time this weekend when it travels to Cal State Fullerton. The team will not leave the state of California until Dec. 21 when it faces Washington State.
As for the Waves, this is the first of back-to-back away games for the program, with Iowa on the docket for Monday night. Pepperdine already has two wins under its belt, thanks to victories over Fresno State (89-74) and Cal Lutheran (76-61).
In that contest versus Cal Lutheran, Stacy Davis tallied 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds, his effort on the glass coming in behind only Jett Raines who posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Lamond Murray Jr. came off the bench and provided a spark with 16 points and six rebounds in only 21 minutes of action, while Amadi Udenyi was responsible for eight of the team's 18 assists, but still missed all eight of his field goal tries.
A career 13.4 ppg scorer, Davis is posting 20.0 ppg over the first two games of this season and is second on the glass with 8.5 rpg, trailing only Raines (12.0 ppg) with his 9.0 rpg. Jeremy Major has done a little bit of everything in the early going, from scoring (14.0 ppg), to rebounding (6.0 rpg) and passing (4.0 apg).
Jordan Baker led four players in double figures with 17 points, although his six turnovers before fouling out also proved to be costly, as the Spartans took the hit against visiting Portland over the weekend. Frank Rogers pitched in with 16 points, Jalen James and Darryl Gaynor 13 and 12, respectively, while Jaleel Williams tried to make up for his 2-of-7 shooting from the floor by pulling down a team-high 10 boards in the losing cause.
Baker did not appear in the opener, nor did Frank Rogers, which means the player with the most overall points for the Spartans after two games is Rashad Muhammad with his 11.0 ppg, thanks to a perfect 7-of-7 showing at the free- throw line and 5-of-9 accuracy out on the perimeter. Defensively, SJSU has held the first two foes to only 32.0 percent shooting from the floor, an effort that will be difficult to duplicate for the next three months.
As long as Baker and Rogers are in the lineup for the Spartans at some point in this contest the visitors will have a solid shot at the win, although SJSU has to be prepared for the fact that Pepperdine will probably shoot better than 32.0 percent.
