SAN DIEGO TOREROS

San Diego Toreros

San Diego Toreros VS. Western Michigan Broncos

Western Michigan (3-0) at San Diego (2-1)

GAME NOTES: Coming off a resounding victory over Florida A&M, the San Diego Toreros will host the Western Michigan Broncos in a non-conference tilt in the 2014 Wooden Legacy Tournament at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Western Michigan opened the season with wins over Aquinas and Oakland, and then took on Drake in the team's most recent matchup. The Broncos came away with the win, 91-75.

San Diego opened the 2014-15 campaign in the LMU Classic, and dropped a season-opening game to Boise State, but rebounded the next night for a win over Southeast Missouri State. In the team's first home game, the Toreros took down Florida A&M, 72-41.

This contest between Western Michigan and San Diego will be the first ever on the basketball court.

Both Drake and Western Michigan were on fire in the first half of Saturday's contest, as the Bulldogs took a 46-41 lead into intermission after shooting 70.8 percent from the floor in the first half. But the Broncos hung tough, netting 61.5 percent of their field goal tries in the half. They were rewarded in the second frame, as Drake dropped down to 40 percent shooting while WMU maintained a 60.7 percent shooting clip to make the comeback. Tucker Haymond scored 24 points to lead the Broncos, while Connar Tava netted 20 points of his own with seven assists in the win. David Brown chipped in 14, and Austin Richie scored 11 to round out the double-digit scorers.

Those four players for WMU are all averaging point totals in double figures this season, led by Tava's 18.0 ppg mark. Western Michigan is certainly an offensive-driven unit, netting 86.7 ppg through four games and shooting 59 percent from the floor. The team is also holding opponents to just 67.7 ppg as well, making the victories even more one-sided. Richie (16.3 ppg), Haymond (16.0 ppg) and Brown (13.3 ppg) all make up the top scorers for the Broncos.

Florida A&M couldn't get much going offensively against San Diego in the Toreros' win over the Rattlers. San Diego held FAMU to just 32.7 percent shooting in the contest, while the Toreros went off, shooting 54 percent in the game, despite hitting only 4-of-17 from 3-point distance. Thomas Jacobs nearly attained a double-double for the Toreros with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Johnny Dee matched Jacobs' point total with 14 of his own. Chris Anderson netted 10 points with six assists in the win.

San Diego is scoring an average of 71.3 ppg this season, but is getting more done of the defensive end of the floor by holding opponents to just 59.3 ppg. Dee has been sensational through three contests, scoring a team-high 20.3 ppg with a 5.0 rpg mark. Anderson checks in behind Dee in the scoring department with 11.7 ppg, and already has 24 assists to his name on the new season. Jacobs rounds out the double-digit San Diego scorers through three contests with an even 10.0 ppg on 63.2 percent shooting from the field.

San Diego appears poised to make a run in the West Coast Conference this season, but Western Michigan is already an established team in the Mid- American Conference with a handful of strong scorers, rebounders and role players. The Toreros will get a boost from their home crowd, but the Broncos may be too much for the San Diego defense to handle.
