Recap: Rider vs. Santa Clara
Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jared Brownridge scored 27 points and Brandon Clark added 23, powering Santa Clara to a 68-60 win over Rider on Sunday in the consolation bracket of the Orlando Classic.
Brownridge and Clark combined for 17 of Santa Clara's 24 made field goals and the duo also connected on 8-of-15 from three-point range, led by Brownridge's 6-for-11 effort. Matt Hubbard chipped in 10 points for the Broncos (3-4), who stopped a four-game skid.
Jimmie Taylor scored 18 points and Matt Lopez contributed 14 for Rider (2-5), which has lost four in a row. Zedric Sadler, who entered the contest averaging 10.2 points, went 0-for-10 from the field and failed to score.
Santa Clara scored the game's first eight points, but Rider responded with an 18-3 run to build an 18-11 advantage with 7 1/2 minutes to play in the first half. It was still a seven-point game a few minutes later, but the Broncos closed the half with an 11-2 burst and grabbed a 26-24 lead at the break.
Hubbard and Brownridge opened the second half with 3-pointers to extend the margin to eight and a triple by Clark a few moments later pushed the Broncos' cushion to 37-28.
Rider pulled within 49-48 on a trey by Taylor with 7 1/2 minutes remaining, but Hubbard and Clark sandwiched layups around a Taylor miss from beyond the arc to restore control for Santa Clara.
A layup by Lopez with 90 seconds to play allowed Rider to creep within two, but Clark hit a pair from the line and Sadler missed a 3-point try. Taylor grabbed the offensive rebound for Rider, but had a shot blocked by Hubbard and a steal by Brownridge led to a three-point play that sealed the contest with 21 seconds left.
Taylor hit a three to bring Rider within four, but Clark and Brownridge each drained a pair from the stripe in the closing moments.
